Houston is a sprawling metropolis with something for everyone. The city’s metropolitan scene combines world-class arts and business with professional sports and award-winning cuisine. It’s also home to the first professional symphony orchestra in Texas, resident ballet, opera and theatre companies and numerous other performing arts venues, many of which can be found in the downtown Theater District.

A century ago, oil was discovered in the Spindletop field and dramatically changed Houston’s economic future. The discovery of oil led to the expansion of the port, the development of a railroad and a shipping channel that opened up new markets throughout the Gulf Coast. In addition, the city built its first airport in 1928 and now has three airports: William P. Hobby, Houston Intercontinental and George Bush International.

As the population grew, city burghers sought federal funding to expand Buffalo Bayou into a deep-water harbor. The effort paid off in 1910, when the 36-foot-deep Houston Ship Channel was completed. It linked the port with the Mississippi River navigation system, and fueled Houston’s industrial boom.

Today, the city has a major international airport, and it’s also served by rail, bus and subway lines. In addition, the highway system connects Houston to most of the nation’s major cities.

Houston is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the United States. Its population includes people of more than 90 nationalities and ethnic groups. Many of these groups celebrate their heritage with festivals and events in Houston.

The city’s downtown core is anchored by the Theater District, a popular area packed with multiple museums catering to every artistic interest. Among them are the Museum of Fine Arts, Moody Center for the Arts and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

Downtown is also the site of Minute Maid Park, which houses the professional baseball team of the same name. The ballpark is a few blocks southwest of Reliant Center, which contains convention, sports and entertainment facilities. That complex also includes the Astrodome, the first full-sized domed stadium and the site of the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Across the street is Toyota Center, which hosts the Houston Rockets professional basketball team.
